Aircraft Structures Mechanic Boeing - "Aviation is getting bigger, faster and more technologically advanced," says Brian Finnegan, president of the Professional Aviation Maintenance Association. While major U.S. airlines are struggling, general aviation companies and smaller aircraft and aircraft manufacturers are looking for new talent to work as aircraft mechanics as the existing workforce ages.
"We're seeing a lot of opportunities, it's slowly coming back," he says. With developments such as large aircraft and drones on the horizon, the industry is becoming increasingly complex and needs mechanics to keep up with ever-changing technology.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), there are currently 154,000 aircraft mechanics in the United States, and the BLS divides the profession into four categories:

Look for well-established schools that require at least 1,900 hours of instruction and have an acceptance rate of 70 percent or higher, says Don Newton, director of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics (PIA). Newton recommends choosing schools with higher than average hourly requirements. “You want to go beyond the basics,” he says. "See what hands-on training they offer."
These schools provide students with the basics of a master class, such as understanding the laws of electricity and reading blueprints, as well as hands-on lab work. “A good school will include new technology in addition to FAA requirements,” Newton says.
Entry into aviation school requires a high school diploma or equivalent, but no prior experience is essential. "I've seen kids with no mechanical experience do really well," says Brian Tobias, an FAA-designated mechanical examiner.
"If you want to be an airplane mechanic, you can't get off the street," Tobias says. So, once you finish school, you have to take the certification test. Although the test is not necessarily a job requirement, it is preferred by employers. "There are relatively no restrictions on a mechanic certificate holder to work on a particular type of aircraft or perform specialized maintenance duties," he says. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires 18 months of work experience for airframe, powerplant, or avionics repairman certification and 30 months for combined airframe/powerplant certification.

Completing a program at an FAA-certified mechanic school can substitute for work experience. Attending one of the 200 mechanical engineering schools in the United States is the most common way to enter the industry; however, veterans who demonstrate good work experience may qualify for certification, as may individuals with sufficient practical experience but no training.
The tests include a series of computer-based exams followed by a day spent with a certified examiner. The applicant then works on a series of hands-on projects covering 44 subjects ranging from small commuter aircraft to Boeing-sized aircraft.
After you get a license, the place of work depends on your interests. "You have major airlines, commuter airlines, engine manufacturers or fixed base operators all over the country and the world," Newton says. You can work on an assembly line at airports where you service aircraft at the gate, or you can work on helicopters, as part of a team on large aircraft or in a workshop where you repair small aircraft yourself. "Right now, I see small carriers taking on new people for $14 to $15 an hour," Tobias says.
Wherever you go, don't expect to work from 9 to 5. "Work is often done at night and on the streets," says Finnegan. "Mechanics are athletes who climb stairs and work in confined spaces. You must be fit.”

The day celebrates the achievements of maintenance technicians who maintain and repair aircraft; their role is essential to keep people safe. The date of May 24 was chosen in honor of the birthday of Charles Edward Taylor, who participated in the creation of the engine for the aircraft of the Wright brothers.
On May 24, 2007, the United States House of Representatives proposed a resolution to celebrate National Aviation Maintenance Technician Day. It was adopted in 2008 to create AMT Day.

There are AMT programs in the United States and around the world that allow students to graduate at the technical level or move on to graduate training in aviation maintenance management. Military service is another place where AMTs are trained for this job.
Erickson participates in the Airframe and Propulsion (A&P) training program through Rogue Community College (RCC). Students participating in the program attend relevant courses at RCC, learning AMT skills through on-the-job training at our Southern Oregon facility. Upon successful completion of the apprenticeship program and required FAA examinations, participants are awarded an A&P license.
AMTs gain in-depth knowledge of aircraft and may specialize in certain aircraft models and functional areas such as engine, hydraulic and electrical systems or structures, etc. In some organizations like Erickson, AMTs travel to locations. in the US and in different countries by mission.
