S&w Model 39 - The Smith & Wesson Model 39 is a semi-automatic pistol designed for service pistol testing by the United States Army in 1954.

During World War II, the German Walther P38 double-barrel/single-action pistol impressed U.S. military personnel that the U.S. Army issued a U.S. proposal for his P38 equivalent. In 1949, Smith & Wesson began developing his 39×19mm Ruger model, which hit the market in 1955. It was the first double-barreled automatic pistol (DA) designed in the United States and was designed to replace his talking M1911A1. The 1911 was still very popular in law enforcement, military and civilian use, but offered a distinctive action and heavy metal frame.

A modified version of the Model 39 with a wider frame to accommodate a 14-round magazine, it was used by the Navy's Special Fleet during the Vietnam War.

Issued as a side weapon to the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the MST-2 Squadron. The SEAL team either used the 39 model unmodified or modified the Mk 22 Mod 0 and called it the "Hush Puppy".

The modified pistol is equipped with a slide lock (prevents the slide from sliding backwards when firing, reducing noise). The Mk 22 Mod 0 raises the bar for easier visibility than bulky restraints. The purpose of the firearm is to kill dogs and guards without informing the primary target.

The Mk 22 is the basis for the next generation of Smith & Wesson 59 models and retains his original 9mm Parabellum caliber, but with a straight rear strap to accommodate his two-row 14-row magazine. It incorporates a wide aluminum frame with

Semi-automatic stacking and time rotation.

The Model 39 is designed with an anodized aluminum frame, curved rear and blue carbon steel slides that provide a manual safety. The grip consists of 3 pieces of 2 walnut plates attached to the handle of the aluminum frame with screws. The next variation of the Model 39 includes black polymer grips. The Model 39's magazine release is behind a protective key, in contrast to most European designs that still use heels. The Model 39 used a traditional slide, bushing and barrel arrangement as opposed to the exposed barrel and P38 drop lock block arrangement. The slide lock to tank of the Model 39 lock is achieved by modifying the Browning P35 (high power) camera lock bracket.

The 1st generation 39th generation slides used long spring steel strippers or spring loaded claw strippers. Long filter devices were changed to fragile ones and replaced by pointer types. However, the longer extractor turned out to be more reliable than the pivot version.

The Model 39 uses many of the features commonly found in the Walther P38. For example, integrated safety devices, split keys and hammer breakers. Smith & Wesson ev also copied the 8-round single-issue magazine, but added a cut-out his magazine to facilitate the release of the button near the key of the popular American pistol. The Model 39 has an overall length of 7.6 inches and a tank length of 4 inches. The Model 39 weighs 1.72 pounds. This lightness is due to the aluminum frame.

In the first tests, about 39 models were built with steel frames. This steel-framed test model provided the basis for the Model 52 Target Pistol. The Model 52 has a longer barrel and slide (5 inches) than ever for a special .38 printer box and some semi-automatic pistols (pistols armed only with full wadcutter bullets). Magazine capacity is limited to 5 rounds due to the shape of the end-mounted printer box. Additional variations of the 952 in 9mm Luger are still available in limited quantities by Smith & Wesson's Performance Cter. The Model 52 was discontinued in 1992 after his machine gun was damaged and considered too expensive to replace.

The original 39 model is now known as the "Generation 1" design due to the number of similar designs that evolved into his three generations of semi-automatic pistols manufactured until 2004. The 1st generation is 2 digits, the 2nd generation is 3 digits, and the 3rd generation is 4 digits.

A second generation of the 39 model, known as the 439, was released in the 1980s. Also released 639 which is 439 made of stainless steel. In 1989 the 439 was replaced by the 3904, a third generation model with a custom stainless steel version of the 3906. Both 3904 and 3906 were discontinued in 1991, and large-capacity double-stacked models such as 5906 attracted attention. It marks the d of the Smith & Wesson Model 39 family, and the third tire was discontinued in his 1999 to support the cheaper Sigma line.

Smaller version variations of the 39th generation models were introduced in 1990 by Smith & Wesson with shorter frames and slides, including the 3913, 3914, 3953, 3954 and 908 models. These pistols incorporate many of the innovations used by Paris Theodore. By Charles Kelsey of the ASP pistol and his version of the Devel pistol, a custom miniature of the Model 39. Thirty-one years ago, the U.S. Army adopted the M9 Beretta designed by Smith and Wesson as his primary service pistol An action pistol for military testing. The year is 1954 and the pistol is a Smith & Wesson Model 39. The Model 39 made extensive use of his P38 pistol in Germany, attracted the attention of U.S. pistols, and was used by various law enforcement agencies approved by his SEALs in Vietnam as the "Hushpuppy" brand (Small Arms Review , see The Hushpuppy). The basis for the famous ASP pistol designed by Paris Theodore, it is a revolutionary pistol that incorporates many concepts common to modern defensive rifles.

His first 39's model had a metal frame and slide. Later the steel frame was replaced with an aluminum alloy.

The first time I was bitten by his ASP bug (and Smith 39) was in 1994 when a friend handed me the coolest pistol I had ever seen. The Gutter Snipe's sleek lines, defined grip, and distinctive legibility leave a lasting impression of the ASP. Now that it's stable, I'm preparing to do an ASP clone. As part of that process, I used the Smith & Wesson Model 39-2 used here.

Number 39-2 is the same as number 39, but with a different spring-loaded pull. The gun I purchased had a post-nickel finish, but the factory nickel gun market was available and claimed a premium price today.

When I run the raw engine process, the model scores 39 points and works fine. Trigger double action, single column, safety magazine with slide and speaker make the pistol easy to grip. Unlike more modern designs, the shooter's hand has to sit on the axle and visibility is standard these days.Although the shotgun is good, firing 147 bonded JHP his 200 rounds So it was 100% reliable.

His single eight-row round magazine helps provide an easy grip for the shooter. The double action trigger on this pistol is 11lbs 11oz and the single action trigger breaks at 5lbs 3oz.

Slide 39-2. Please note that the lock key of the straight bar will not stick. It is held in place by a barrel bushing (top right) that is held in place by a guide rod.

Main his housing for alloy wheels on model 39-3. The sloppy notes fit the Beavertail frame in particular.

The machining on these original Smith and Wesson pistols is top notch. This is the front of the slide, not the instrument markers.

Another Vintage S&w Comes Home With Me...

Bush recalls his 1911. Instead of a plug-in lock like the 1911, Smith's bushings 39 and 39-2 are locked into place at the ends of the spring bolts.

I like shooting his 39-2 of Smith and Wesson. The target was fired at a distance of 7 yards, double action from the ready position.

Although the design is over 50 years old, the Smith & Wesson 39's design doesn't look too dated. Despite being old, it is still a very old pistol.

I asked a teacher created for federal agencies who knew and respected his ideas for Models 39 and 59. Here's what he told me:
